Turfing

People in general think turfing is a straight forward job but without the right ground preparation and expertise the grass will not last a season, a little snippet of information the first job i was left alone to do by myself 26 years ago was a little patch of turf (its still there) There is nothing more satisfying than getting an instant transformation or putting the finishing touch to your dream garden with a new lawn and when the lawn installation is done by professionals you enjoy long lasting results of a thriving lush lawn.

Having a New Lawn installed by us

When having a new lawn installed even though it looks a straight forward job and in some cases it is, but there's a few things we have to consider.

Lawn Drainage

When it comes to lawn drainage there are two main factors here.

  • Ideally you want the drainage of your new lawn to run away from your house, if it slopes towards your house and up to the walls drainage will need to be installed, if not it will become water logged and turn to mud.

  • Any patios or driveways that drain into the lawn can be but not always be a problem for your lawn, if you have heavy soil and slow drainage this can stress the grass, a drain or soak away might be needed at the lawns edge to the patio or driveway to carry the water a way.

Slopes

either the slopes are planned into your garden design or part of existing landscapes a few things have to be considered.

  • The apex of your slope or mound should have a gradually curve or when mowing it get a lot of scalping.

  • If the slopes are steep they will be hard to mow and the water will run away fast, so can become very dry quickly.

  • The bottom of your slope might get water logged, so drainage might need to be installed.

  • If your slope is moderate we might need to peg the turf until it roots to stop sliding.

Lawn Design

The beauty of a new lawn is it can be pretty much any shape or size and easily fitted into your garden design, but still there are a few things to factor in.

  •  Straight edges and gentle curves are easiest to mow and maintain.

  • Keep access points to your lawn wide and numerous as possible, a narrow entry point will concentrate foot traffic and wear the grass.

  • Try and keep the number of islands or obstacles down, shrubberies, trees, bird baths etc, will make mowing harder and increase edging chores.

  • Choose the right turf for how much sunlight the area will get.

Timing

Turfing can be done at pretty much anytime of the year so there is only a couple of things to think about

  • Summer it will require considerable amount of watering especially the early stages.

  • Winter easier on the watering but watch out for constant heavy frost.
